Ever wondered how those crazy nutters go out on those long, crazy, inspiring expeditions? I discovered the tactic in taking on an adventure of your own. It is in essence very easy! My definition of an adventure is rather broad and rudimentary, but does give everyone an opportunity to have a full on adventure, even in their own backyard.

“"Adventure - an unusual and exciting or daring experience”."

It is hard to know what an adventure really entails till you have been on one of your own, that I am sure of.

I believe the most important aspect of an adventure is to do it. There are multiple reasons why a person would not go on an adventure but it is of the outmost importance to ignore those ideas or feelings. The internet is full of blogs and articles that will explain the first rule of an adventure is to actually say “stuff this, let'’s do it”. I fully agree with this saying.

I also feel planning should not be the beginning or the end of your adventure but just a guideline. It rarely works out, and being surprised by changing plans could be the greatest threat to your adventure. I set myself lo

ng and short term guidelines to follow while leaving out almost any indebted planning. This gives me the freedom to change without feeling guilty or fearful. You can't change something you don'’t have and this keeps you on your toes. Especially on solo expeditions being on your toes helps you to stay sane and safe.

The idea that adventure is for a certain type of person I do think is wrong. But the size and creativity of the adventure could differ from person to person.

All it takes is the will to go out and do it. The last year and a half I heard every excuse under the sun not to walk through Iceland (or go on some similar expeditions). This is rather sad…. People prefer the coach above an adventure, while the latter could be much safer. My trek spanned over vast areas of uninhabitable landscape, crossing lava fields, volcanoes and mountainous areas. Landscapes you only dream of in South Africa.

I was extremely privileged to be able to travel overseas and trek through one of the most beautiful countries on earth. This all was possible by two factors; one was my mind-set to commit into the unknown and then secondly lucky to be sponsored via the Supertramp Award. I will advise anyone to put their mind to an unusual and exciting experience, and enter for the Supertramp Award. This could be your key to start your adventurous life.
