“Happiness is not found in the end of an adventure, but will be found during the endless journey that is wishing for the end.” Bernie Theron – Diary entry: Day 27

Supertramp 2014
After my trip down the East Coast I was very inspired to go out and try something new and exciting. I already had the idea of crossing Iceland in my head so I did a bit of research and made a final decision on attempting it. Getting the funds was one of my obstacles thus I send a proposal to MCSA. for the Supertramp Award*.
Weeks later I got the email that I won the award and will be on my way to Iceland in a couple of months.
At the beginning of June I climbed on a plane and headed off to Iceland. I quickly discovered the diversity of this country. Lavafields, icefields, volcanoes, glaciers, deserts and marshlands was some of the different landscapes I would encounter while hiking across the country.
On the 1st of July I started my trek in the North. It was cold, windy and rainy, which made everything quite different from the sunny skies of South Africa. But I was extremely motivated and enjoyed the scenery a lot, which gave me hope for future sunny days. Luckily for me there was a couple.
Over the next 4 weeks I hiked around 650km, crossing the mindboggling landscape of Iceland. I experienced amazing, boring, lonely and dangerous days.
When I reached the southern tip of Iceland it was a bit of an anti-climax, it is hard to explain how it feels to end such an experience. Getting used to an simplistic daily life, and suddenly you have to stop and wonder what's next...
*The MCSA Supertramp Award is an expedition award for up to R18 000. It is awarded once a year by the Magaliesberg Section of the Mountain Club of South Africa. South African citizens who are no older than 25 years are eligible.
