“Happiness is not found in the end of an adventure, but will be found during the endless journey that is wishing for the end.” Bernie Theron – Diary entry: Day 27

Lake Malawi
One of my first dreams of the pursuit of adventure was to paddle across lake Malawi or any of the great lakes in Africa. With the help of the great team at Fish Eagle Bay Lodge, I was able to undertake this dream of mine in mid-2016.
I had basically no experience in sea kayaking or any kayaking for that matter and everything was extremely new for me but that is no excuse to chicken out, right?
It just made the rush of the whole trip just so much better.
It all started when I needed to get the gear down south, it turned out into a bit of an epic. It took me 1 full day, 2 bicycle taxis, 2 trucks, two normal taxis and one pick up truck to get my kayak and gear to South of Lake Malawi.
On the 25 of July, I ventured into the lake for the first time and ended my adventure on the 31 of August. Between these two dates, I had one hell of an adventure!
I was always wet, sunburned, dehydrated, sea sick and sometimes fearful for my life. I paddled in the wrong time of the year meaning I had to battle endless wind and some epic storms to navigate.
The depressing part of this trip was the devastating human impact the Malawians have on the environment in and around the magical Lake.
I ended my trip extremely glad to be of the lake. This month could easily be the hardest month I have had in the last couple of years.
A big shout out goes to Fish Eagle Bay Lodge for making this adventure a reality!
